AutoInsides Weekly Digest | August 8–14, 2026

This week has been a busy one for the Indian auto industry, with Mahindra preparing multiple new products, Skoda gearing up for the Slavia facelift, MG expanding its EV/PHEV portfolio and Ather moving closer to a more affordable electric scooter. Two-wheeler updates were equally interesting.

1. Mahindra’s Big Independence Day Product Offensive
Mahindra is heading into Independence Day with several important reveals. The company has teased the BE 6 Sporteq, while the Scorpio-N-based pickup is also scheduled for its global debut around August 14.
The BE 6 Sporteq is expected to bring a sportier cabin and unique design touches, while the Scorpio-N pickup could give Mahindra a stronger presence in the lifestyle pickup market.
Impact: Mahindra is clearly pushing beyond its traditional SUV portfolio and building a much broader product strategy.
2. MG Hector Hawk Set for August 26 Launch
JSW MG Motor India has opened the next chapter of its SUV strategy with the upcoming Hector Hawk, scheduled for launch on August 26, 2026. The three-row SUV is based on the Wuling Starlight 560 and is expected to offer both plug-in hybrid and fully electric powertrains.
That's particularly interesting for India because PHEVs could offer buyers a middle ground between conventional petrol SUVs and fully electric vehicles.
Impact: MG could become one of the first mainstream manufacturers to seriously test the PHEV-plus-EV strategy in this segment.
3. Skoda Slavia Facelift Coming on August 18
The Skoda Slavia facelift has been officially teased ahead of its India launch on August 18. The update is expected to bring refreshed styling, more equipment and a new 8-speed automatic transmission.
The Slavia continues to sit in a segment where sedans are under pressure from SUVs. So Skoda's challenge is not simply updating the car—it has to give buyers a reason to choose a sedan over a compact or midsize SUV.
Impact: A stronger Slavia could give the shrinking sedan segment a useful boost.
4. Ather’s Affordable EV Scooter Is Coming
Ather Energy is preparing to unveil its first production scooter based on the new EL platform on August 29. The new architecture is designed to support more scalable and affordable electric scooters.
The upcoming model is expected to target the ₹1 lakh–₹1.25 lakh price bracket, putting Ather into a much larger volume segment than its traditional 450-series positioning.
The bigger story here is affordability. Ather has built a strong technology-focused image, but the next phase of growth will depend on reaching more mainstream buyers.
Impact: The new scooter could intensify competition with TVS, Bajaj, Ola and other mass-market EV players.
5. New Bajaj Pulsar N160 Variants Arrive
Bajaj has expanded the Pulsar N160 range with new variants featuring a 4-valve engine, multiple riding modes and connected technology, according to reports from the launch week.
The N160 already sits in one of India's most competitive motorcycle categories. The latest feature additions are aimed at keeping the Pulsar relevant against newer 160cc rivals.
Bajaj's official N160 lineup already offers features such as dual-channel ABS, navigation and multiple ride modes on selected variants.
Impact: The 160cc motorcycle segment is becoming increasingly feature-rich, not just performance-focused.
6. VinFast VF 5 Spotted Testing in India
VinFast's VF 5 has been spotted in India, indicating that the Vietnamese EV maker may be considering another model for our market. The sub-4-metre electric SUV would potentially compete around the Tata Punch/Nexon and Mahindra XUV 3XO territory.
For VinFast, adding a smaller and more affordable model could be important as it works on establishing its presence in India.
Impact: More affordable EV competition could put pressure on existing players to improve pricing, range and features.
7. Mahindra Scorpio N Update Reaches Dealers
The updated Mahindra Scorpio N has started reaching dealerships, with a panoramic sunroof among the confirmed changes. Pricing for the updated SUV is expected to be announced soon.
This comes at an interesting time because the Scorpio N remains one of Mahindra's strongest products, especially among buyers looking for a rugged seven-seat SUV.
Impact: The update should help Mahindra keep the Scorpio N fresh while competition in the larger SUV space continues to grow.
8. Volkswagen Plans Another Sub-4m SUV
A ₹275-crore project linked to a Kylaq-based sub-4m Volkswagen SUV has reportedly received approval. The development points towards Volkswagen expanding its presence in India's high-volume compact SUV market.
The segment already includes the Brezza, Nexon, Venue, Sonet, XUV 3XO and several other strong sellers.
Volkswagen entering with another compact SUV makes sense. This is where India's biggest pool of SUV buyers currently sits.
Impact: More competition could mean better features and sharper pricing for buyers.
9. Ultraviolette Posts Record July Sales
Premium electric motorcycle maker Ultraviolette recorded its highest-ever monthly sales in July 2026, selling 694 motorcycles, a reported 406% year-on-year increase.
The absolute volume is still small compared with mass-market motorcycle manufacturers, but the growth shows that India's premium electric motorcycle market is gradually expanding.
Impact: Premium EV motorcycles are moving beyond niche enthusiast territory, although volumes remain modest.
10. July SUV Numbers Show Mahindra's Strength
July sales data continues to underline India's strong appetite for SUVs. In the 4.5m–4.8m SUV segment, total sales reached 40,150 units, up 24.26% year-on-year and 6.32% month-on-month. Mahindra occupied three of the top six positions.
That tells us something important: SUV demand isn't slowing down. Buyers continue to prioritise road presence, cabin space and practicality.
Impact: Expect manufacturers to keep directing new product investments towards SUVs rather than traditional sedans.
AutoInsides Expert Take
SUVs remain the centre of India's car market, with Mahindra continuing to strengthen its position.
EV competition is getting wider, from premium motorcycles and affordable scooters to new electric SUVs.
The next few weeks will be launch-heavy, with the Slavia facelift, Mahindra products, MG Hector Hawk and other new models lined up.
And for buyers, that's good news. More launches mean more choices—and potentially better deals.
